Re-membering the CIV (Centre d’Identification de Vincennes) is a research project led by Beth Weinstein that aims to make this detention and internment camp’s location, its architecture and the events that occurred there knowable to a broad public. The research explores how AR technologies can create a dynamic experience of a virtual CIV, as well as previously silenced voices, in the site where this internment camp once stood. This project also speculates on how site-specific events, in the neighborhoods where those interned once lived and in the site of the CIV, can expand engagement with the phantom CIV into embodied, collective, performative, and spatial acts of re-membering.

Events

Narrated walk to the CIV / Promenade commentée vers le CIV

OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2026

You are invited to participate in a journey the site of the former CIV (indicated on the map below). These events will occur most Friday mornings and Sunday afternoons between 18 Oct. and 20 Dec. 2026. Please register for a specific date through the events page. If none of these are feasible, please get in touch through the contact page to communicate your interest in participating and to reserve a different date and time.

Excursions will depart from the Metro Château de Vincennes (or cafe adjacent to the metro), and walk through the Bois de Vincennes to the location on the route de la Pyramide. While we are on site, you are encouraged to enter the virtual CIV which you can access through the QR code on this website (and which will also be made available to you once on site). Recommend that you have a charged smart device.

Feel free to test the QR code on your own, record your entering into the CIV through the app and sharing your recording. We are very interested in your feedback and look forward to sharing this experience with you.

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2025

During the months of November and December 2025, several walking tours took place. Participants included historians of the Algerian War of Independence, activists and memory workers, artists and curators, architects and photographers. We thank the participants for their trust and sharing their time and stories.
